Data science incorporates varying elements and builds on techniques and theories from many fields, including mathematics, statistics, data engineering, pattern recognition and learning, advanced computing, visualization, uncertainty modeling, data warehousing, and high performance computing with the goal of extracting meaning from data and creating data products.

To get a kick start in data science read the following:
It is suggested to go through the list one after the other but you can always skip any if you know the contents already.

1. Making Sense of Data : It gives a fair idea of statistics along with basic use of R.
2. R Tutorial : R is a free software programming language and software environment for statistical computing and graphics. The R language is widely used among statisticians and data miners for developing statistical software and data analysis.
3. Introduction to Data Science : It will give a high boost in data science. It is a very good tutorial for people with basic programming OR analytical knowledge.
